During the late Edo period, kokeshi dolls were likely a child's first toy. They originated in the Tohuko region north of Tokyo. Kokeshi appealed to travelers and quickly grew popular as souvenirs. Today, kokeshi are a celebrated traditional folk art in Japan and widely collected.
This wasshoi kokeshi is named for the collective sound of encouragement made by people when carrying the mikoshi, or portable shrines, during Japanese festivals. Handpainted and imported from Japan. Packaged in a box ready to give or receive.
