During the late Edo period (1600-1867) kokeshi dolls were likely to be a child's first toy. Originating in the Tohoku region north of Tokyo, kokeshi appealed to travelers and quickly grew as popular souvenirs. Today, kokeshi are widely collected as a celebrated traditional folk art in Japan.
