During the late Edo period (1600-1867) kokeshi dolls were likely a child's first toy. Originating in the Tohuko region north of Tokyo, kokeshi appealed to travelers and quickly grew popular as souvenirs. Today, kokeshi are widely collected as a celebrated traditional folk art in Japan.
