The daruma doll is often given as a gift of encouragement. It is modeled after the Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th and 6th centuries CE. The Bodhidharma gained a reputation, among many things, for sitting for nine years facing a wall in meditation-an act that caused his legs to fall off! Another interpretation of the legend says that he became so angry with himself he cut off his eyelids to avoid falling asleep.

Today, daruma has more positive associations and is usually gifted with the eyes left blank. The recipient fills in one eye when setting a goal, and the other when the goal is accomplished.

This gold daruma symbolizes wealth and prosperity.
